Worksite influenza immunisation: who takes part?

Jens Rickmann, Marie-Luise Pfeifer, Klaus Enz

Summary
INTRODUCTION: The influence that programs of worksite health promotion can have on public health is not only limited by the level of supply. AIM: The aim of this study was to analyse characteristics of participants of a worksite influenza immunisation program to reveal limitations caused by the level of utilisation by the staff. POPULATIONS AND METHODS: Demographic data of the participants of the influenza immunisation program 2004 in a large company of the financial sector were compared with those of all employees at this place (basic population). Statistical data of the years 2000–2003 were included. Statistical analyses were performed with the software package R 1.4.1©. RESULTS: The proportion of participants in the years 2000–2004 varies from 8.7 % to 10.4 %; different organisational conditions of the program 2004 compared to the previous year do not influence this proportion. Among the participants, the proportion of male employees exceeds with 67.3 % (95 % Confidence interval [CI] 63.7 %–70.7 %) those among the basic population (61.7 %) and the average age of the participants is about 2 years higher (41.3 [95 % CI 40.6–42.1] vs. 39.2). 80.6 % of the participants took part in the company´s influenza immunisation programs of the preceding years. CONCLUSION: The participants of the annual influenza immunisation program represent a subgroup of the studied company, which remains stable over the studied period as far as quantity and composition is regarded. Further planning of WHP programs both on company and on public health level has to take into account limitations due to employee´s attitude towards utilisation.
